Crafting safely
Making things is fun — and safe when you take a few sensible precautions. Please read this before starting a project, especially with children.
Draft for review. This safety guidance is a draft. Have it reviewed by a suitably qualified person, and confirm it against the actual hazards in the launch catalogue, before publishing.
Adult supervision
Many projects are suitable for children, but the right age depends on the project. Always check the age guidance and adult-supervision note on each project. When in doubt, an adult should help.
Tools and materials
- Sharp tools (scissors, craft knives, cutters) are for adults, or for children only under close supervision.
- Heat (glue guns, candles, ovens) can cause burns — keep away from young children and never leave unattended.
- Glues, paints, resins and solvents— use in a ventilated space, follow the manufacturer’s instructions, and check for age suitability.
- Small parts (beads, wire, sequins) are a choking hazard for young children. Keep them out of reach.
- Allergies: check materials if anyone making or receiving the project has known sensitivities (latex, certain glues, nuts in some clays).
General good practice
- Work on a clean, stable, well-lit surface.
- Keep tools and materials away from food, eyes and mouths.
- Tie back long hair and loose sleeves near heat or blades.
- Clean up small parts and sharp offcuts as you go.
Please make responsibly
We provide instructions in good faith, but we can’t supervise your workspace, tools or materials. You are responsible for making safely and for supervising anyone crafting with you. If a project doesn’t feel safe for your situation, don’t attempt it.
Report a safety concern
If you think a project is unsafe or missing a warning, tell us at safety@artalltheway.comand we’ll review it promptly.
